About Me

My name is pronounced ['ʃʌbri] (not [ʃə'bri] or ['ʃæbri] !)

Academic Stuff

I have a B.Soc.Sc. in International Development from the University of Ottawa, an MA in Linguistics (with research specialization) from the University of Amsterdam, and am currently in my 2nd year of the PhD program at the University of Toronto's department of Linguistics.

My research interests primarily involve heritage languages, specifically heritage varieties of Hindi. I've done experimental research investigating how first-generation speakers and second-generation speakers of Hindi (within the context of Canada) differ with respect to word-order in ditransitive constructions.

I'm also interested in World Englishes and am currently researching the use of the word only as a pragmatic marker in the New Delhi variety of Indian English.

All things Indian aside, I'm broadly interested in language documentation and the general study of underrepresented and under-researched languages. Most recently, my work has included a description of the mass/count distinction and the use of classifier constructions in Cusco Quechua.

I am also an advocate for ethnic and cultural diversity within the field of Linguistics, and strongly believe in incorporating a greater amount of compassion, empathy and open-mindedness into the system of academia.

Personal Stuff

I was born and raised in Montréal, QC, and I speak English, French, Spanish and Hindi (I'm also about to start my third-level ASL course!)

I have a number of interests and experiences outside of academia-- I've worked for the Centro de Desarrollo e Investigación de la Selva Alta (CEDISA) in Tarapoto, Peru, and for People for Animals (PFA) in Pune & Panchgani, India. I am also a TESOL-certified teacher, and spent some time teaching English in Tudela de Navarra, Spain.

While living in Amsterdam, I worked for the Amsterdam Music Project, an organization that runs intimate concerts with local musicians in fun & unique spaces all over the city. Music is my biggest passion (after linguistics!), and being able to organize and host gigs every week, while working on my MA thesis, has been the highlight of my travels & experiences to date.

Aside from all that-- I spend most of my time hanging out with my dog, Pacey. He's a chihuahua/staffy mix, who is usually wearing a hoodie and a deceivingly innocent expression. I'm also a huge foodie, and a sucker for a good tasting menu with a funky natural wine pairing.
